What to Do in Cambridge for a Day: A 24-Hour Itinerary
Planning a day trip to Cambridge? This itinerary is designed to help you see the city’s highlights in 24 hours without feeling hurried. Thanks to direct train services from London, Cambridge is a popular day-trip destination for those looking to escape the capital and explore one of Britain’s most historic cities. Cambridge is very compact, and if you stay in centrally located accommodation, you’ll easily reach most of the main sights on foot.
This short itinerary includes everything from the city’s famous colleges and museums to a traditional punting experience. And, not forgetting a few key stops for an enjoyable lunch.
Morning: Walk Through Cambridge’s Historic Centre
Once you arrive in Cambridge, it’s the perfect time to get your bearings. If you’re staying centrally, you can access a wide range of Cambridge activities from our doorstep on foot.
Start your day at Market Square – a historic trading square at the heart of the city. Today, it’s still a lively spot featuring around 200 independent traders, offering everything from fresh local produce to fashion. On Sundays, the market often has a stronger local food, arts and crafts feel, with work from local makers and producers.
From here, head towards Great St Mary’s Church. Step inside to appreciate the remarkable architecture, or make your way up the tower for panoramic views across Cambridge's skyline.
Continue along King’s Parade, arguably the most iconic street in Cambridge. This pedestrian-friendly stretch is home to independent boutiques and eateries, as well as the world-famous King’s College Chapel. A short walk away, you’ll find the Corpus Clock – a modern landmark designed by Dr John C Taylor and unveiled by Professor Stephen Hawking. It was named one of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2008.
Along the way, you’ll catch glimpses of the colleges that make up the University of Cambridge, such as:

Late Morning: Visit King’s College Chapel or a Cambridge College
King’s College Chapel is one of Cambridge’s most iconic landmarks, known for its incredible fan-vaulted ceiling and stained-glass windows. In our opinion, it really has to be seen in person to be appreciated.
If King’s isn’t accessible due to opening times or queues, other colleges may be a more viable option. Again, please plan to ensure your preferred college is open for public viewing.
Lunch: Stop for Food, Afternoon Tea or a Relaxed Break
A full day in Cambridge can be exhausting, so take this time to pause and recharge for a spot of lunch.
Market Square is one of the most convenient places in Cambridge to grab a bite, thanks to its mix of independent cafés and street food stalls. A short walk away, you’ll find Parker’s Piece – a large open green space, perfect for a picnic.
Fan of WW2 history? Don’t miss a visit to The Eagle pub. During the war years, it was visited by Allied airmen stationed nearby. They used candles, petrol lighters and lipstick to write names, squadron numbers and messages on the ceiling, many of which are still visible today.
If you’ve reached your capacity at this stage, head back to Gonville Hotel and settle in for a tasty lunch at Gonville Kitchen. Or, why not treat yourself to a traditional afternoon tea?
Afternoon: Go Punting on the River Cam
No visit to Cambridge feels complete without a punt along the River Cam. It gives you the chance to kick back, relax and enjoy some of the city’s famous sights from the water.
Usually lasting around 45 minutes to an hour, a classic College Backs route takes you behind several of the city’s historic colleges. Among them is the world-famous Trinity College, whose notable alumni include Sir Isaac Newton, Lord Byron and Alfred Tennyson. You’ll also pass beneath some of the city's renowned bridges, including the Bridge of Sighs and the Mathematical Bridge.
If it’s your first time punting, a guided tour is recommended. Chauffeurs steer the boat and can also share anecdotes about the history and architecture as you glide along the river.
Aim to book punting in advance, especially during weekends or school holidays. This can reduce wait time and help you obtain your preferred departure slot. It’s also a good idea to check departure points before you arrive, since these can vary along the route.
Late Afternoon: Visit the Fitzwilliam Museum or Botanic Garden
As the day comes to an end, why not finish with a final cultural stop?
If you’re in the mood for art and history, head to the Fitzwilliam Museum. It’s home to a wide-ranging collection that includes ceramics, manuscripts and antiques. If you’re lucky, you may also catch an award-winning exhibition.
Or, pay a visit to the Cambridge University Botanic Garden. It’s the perfect stop-off if you’re walking between Cambridge station, Parker’s Piece, and the nearby Gonville Hotel. The glasshouses include tropical rainforest displays, alongside other plant habitats from around the world.
